The Central Laboratory of General Ecology of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (CLGE-BAS), the National Institute for Agronomic Research, Research Center of Nancy, France (INRA) and the Institute of Biology, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, "Sts. Cyril and Methodius" University Skopje, Macedonia (IB-FNSM) is offering a training course on biomonitoring methods for air quality (Biometh-Air) with the financial support of the SEE-ERA.NET networking project. This 5-day course will be held in Sofia, from 18 to 22 May 2009.

The first four days of the course will cover key concepts and methodologies pertinent to biomonitoring of atmospheric pollution:

  • classical bioindicators and analytical techniques for ecological assessments;
  • other original biomonitors;
  • the concept of air biostations;
  • biomonitoring for educational and social purposes;
  • biomonitoring and human health;
  • air pollution policy in Europe.

There will be a special focus on hands-on exercises and electronic tools for ozone injures. On the final day of the course, a field trip to the observatory in Plana Mountain will be organised.

Young scientists, PhD and MSc students from all the SEE-ERA.NET countries (Albania, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia) with a basic working knowledge of biomonitoring techniques are welcome. Participants from the West Balkan Countries are particularly encouraged to attend.

This intermediate-level course will provide possibilities for participants to perform hands-on exercises on biomonitoring techniques under the supervision of experts from EU research centres. A detailed programme of the course along with information on the lecturers is available here. Attendance for the course will be limited; therefore, interested individuals should register before 10 April 2009.
