LONG-TERM ECOLOGICAL RESEARCH IN EUROPE: THE SOUTH-EAST DIMENSION Workshop was held in Sofia, Bulgaria on February 18-21, 2009 under the auspices of the LTER-EUROPE and ALTER Net.

South-Eastern European countries host most of the biodiversity of the European continent including ecosystem diversity. The long-term studies of these ecosystems can significantly contribute to the success of understanding and maintaining the function of ecosystems on a large spatial and temporal scale.

Long-Term Ecosystem Research (LTER) is an essential component of world wide efforts to better understand ecosystems. This comprises their structure, functions, and response to environmental, societal and economic drivers as well as the development of management options (see the attached Information Sheet).

You could significantly contribute to the building of a South East European Network as part of the LTER-EUROPE network.

The purpose of the workshop was to strengthen the cooperation between South-Eastern European countries in ecosystem studies, to promote exchange of data and finally to initiate development of a South-Eastern LTER network.

The participants presented information on the presence of long-term ecological research in their country and the sites where data is being collected.
